In 2011, Meaux built Europe’s largest museum dedicated to the First World War: the Great War Museum.

Since it opened, over a million visitors have passed through its doors to discover this unique and universal collection of over 70,000 objects and documents.

You may be wondering why Meaux has a museum dedicated to 1914-1918? In September 1914, Meaux and the surrounding area were the scene of some of the fighting in the First Battle of the Marne. Only a month after the outbreak of war, German troops were at the gates of Paris. Victory seemed close at hand! But that was without taking into account the pugnacity of the French and British soldiers, and they succeeded in driving them back. This victory was decisive. Even today, the area remains marked by this swift and deadly battle. Leaving from the Great War museum, a tour invites you to follow in the footsteps of the soldiers of the Great War. Numerous events are organised throughout the year to give everyone a better understanding of the history of the First World War.
